Why we’re supporting TEDxUEA: Original Minds

Something exciting is coming to our doorstep. On Wednesday 11 November, TEDxUEA: Original Minds brings a full day of big ideas to the University of East Anglia, and we’re proud to be part of it.

It’s the first TEDx event at UEA since 2018. Seventeen speakers. Four themes: Creativity, Health, Sustainability and the Future of Work. One day of talks designed to make you see things differently. And it’s all happening at The Enterprise Centre, which (conveniently for us) is where you’ll find our office.

Why we said yes

Curiosity is at the heart of our masterclasses, where we bring people together to learn something new, connect with others and leave inspired. TEDx shares that same spirit. We’ve always believed the best advice comes from asking better questions, listening to fresh perspectives and being willing to think differently, so when the chance came to support TEDxUEA, we didn’t need asking twice.

Four themes, and the questions behind them

Here’s what to expect from each TEDxUEA theme. We look forward to hearing from this great lineup of speakers!

Meet the speakers

Creativity. The day opens by celebrating fresh thinking. Find out how to sell a rock to a caveman with Dr Georgy Pyatakov, and what legal philosophers can teach us about AI with Prof Lucy Barnes. Dr Nick Desnoyer shows how he’s creating living art from flowers, and Prof Nicco Krezdorn explains why your next breakthrough may live in someone else’s toolbox.

Health. Four talks look at health from surprising angles. Dr Daniel Marcu argues it’s time we looked at men, and Dylan Ellis explores what happens when resilience becomes a cage. James Piercy takes us inside technology on the brain, and Dr Stephanie Rossit tells the story of the day half the world disappeared.

Sustainability. After lunch, the focus turns to the world we’re handing on. Dr Alice Godden reveals the genetic future for polar bears, and Kit Marie Rackley connects climate change, care and the future of school. Dr Yafa El Masri asks whether refugees could save the world, and Jaz Brook makes the case for why we should stop saving the planet and start with people.

The Future of Work. The day closes with five talks on how we’ll work next. Joseph Dixon looks at the people the algorithm skipped, and Katy Dorman at making opportunity possible. Kelly Grainger uncovers the workplace rules nobody wrote, Shannon Rivers counts the cost of being easy to hear, and Dr Russell Robinson makes the case for selfish leadership.

Our roots at UEA

Eight members of our team have studied or teach at UEA, so this one feels personal.

Our Director, Richard Ross, holds an MBA and a Graduate Diploma in Economics from UEA, and sits on the UEA School of Economics Strategic Advisory Board. Associate Directors James Bacon and Radostina Dencheva both joined us as graduate trainees after completing their master’s degrees at UEA. Senior Associate Lee Nguyen graduated with a First in Economics from UEA, and now sponsors dissertations for current UEA Economics students. Our newest wealth managers, Stirling Watt and Oliver Wisbey, are UEA graduates too.

Two UEA academics also bring their expertise to our work. Dr Ariel Gu, Assistant Professor in Behavioural Finance, is our external behavioural finance consultant, and Dr James Watson, Associate Professor in Financial Economics, sits on our Investment Committee.

Join in on the day
